Anupama Kundoo was born in Pune, India, and studied the Sir J.J. College of Architecture in Mumbai for her undergraduate education. She pursued postgraduate study and research in Germany, where she obtained her PhD, because of her enthusiasm for sustainability and low-impact building. Her philosophy of architecture was greatly impacted by these cross-cultural encounters.
The Auroville Chapter: Building with Earth and Heart
Kundoo started her career in Auroville, Tamil Nadu, a distinctive experimental community with an emphasis on ecological and spiritual principles. She established her first architectural firm there in 1990, producing structures that prioritized regional resources, time-consuming construction methods, and climate awareness. A distinguishing characteristic of her work was the use of mud, compressed earth blocks, ferrocement, and handcrafted parts.
Research-Driven Design & Integration of BIM
Kundoo stands out as a rare combination of artisan and technologist. While rooted in traditional materials and techniques, she seamlessly incorporates modern tools like Building Information Modeling (BIM) to enhance the precision and efficiency of her projects.
